Calculating social and environmental impacts using Life Cycle Assessment - The case of Prana

Life Cycle Assessment is proving to be a powerful tool for directing corporate strategy towards the greatest potential for reducing environmental impact. This is the approach adopted by the ambitious Prana company. Our colleague Eduardo Sasso has written an article on the subject, published on the BtheChange media, associated with the BCorp certification.

Here are a few key points to bear in mind:

  • Organizational Life Cycle Assessment (O-LCA) focuses on all of an organization's activities. It is a highly effective tool for organizations seeking to gain an overview of their environmental impacts, better understand their value chain, and align their strategy with their main potential for improvement.
  • Prana carried out such an LCA, and was thus able to put into perspective the impacts of its ingredients with those of its packaging, or even with the impacts of its internal activities (employee transport, etc.)
The process enabled it to get closer to its suppliers, to learn more about their practices, and to better direct its questions. Example: as irrigation is probably the biggest source of impact in almond production, Prana was able to be more precise, by asking its suppliers if they already had good irrigation practices. The LCA enabled Prana to review its positioning, and take informed action. Example: review its choice of suppliers, adopt a transparent approach to better communicate its commitment to its entire value chain, including its clients, integrate compost, change its lighting, etc...

What about you? Would you like to have a better understanding of your impact?
