Behind the scenes at COP30

First Peoples and the oil industry

I couldn't hold back my tears this morning as I joined the People's March organized alongside the COP. Alongside indigenous peoples and workers, a single voice rang out: climate justice, protection of biodiversity, respect for the Amazon.

This week, thousands of representatives of Amazonian communities arrived at the COP site and attempted to enter the Blue Zone. Their determination finally prompted President Lula to agree to a meeting.

The experiment expands

The COP site is huge. It takes around 30 minutes to get from one end to the other. The blue zone is for accredited people like us, since we're part of the Quebec delegation led by Investissement Québec.

Biodiversity and human rights

Biodiversity is naturally a major concern in Brazil. Preservation and regeneration are addressed on all fronts. The Florestal Foundation for Forest Conservation and Production in the State of São Paulo, set up in 1986, runs a number of projects, including a wildlife monitoring program and the "Forest Guardians" program, which pays indigenous communities to preserve the forest.

A flagship project recently made official: the creation of a huge protected area, the new Morro Grande Natural Park, covering almost 11,000 hectares. A jewel of biodiversity and home to important water sources.

November 4 and 5 were devoted to the São Paulo summit: its initiatives, successes, challenges and partnerships.
